- New BraunfelsThe seat of Comal County, New Braunfels sits on the Balcones Fault, where the Texas Hill Country breaks into rolling prairie and the artesian Comal Springs feed a river that runs right through the middle of town. Prince Carl of Solms-Braunfels founded the settlement in 1845, and between 2010 and 2020 it was the third-fastest-growing city in the United States.
- San AntonioSan Antonio is the seventh-largest city in the United States and the seat of Bexar County, with limits that also reach into Comal and Medina. Spanish missionaries founded it in 1718, and by 1731 it was the first chartered civil settlement in what is now Texas. Its 1.43 million residents spread across rolling oak and mesquite country.
- San MarcosSpring water rises along the Balcones Fault at San Marcos and feeds a river that has never been recorded running dry, one reason people have lived on this spot for thousands of years. The Hays County seat stands halfway between Austin and San Antonio, is home to Texas State University, and grew from 44,894 residents in 2010 to 67,553 in 2020.
- SeguinSeguin, the seat of Guadalupe County, was founded in 1838 and sits on Interstate 10 about 35 miles east-northeast of downtown San Antonio, with the Guadalupe River running along its south side. Nineteenth-century builders here experimented with concrete made from local materials, and roughly twenty of those early concrete structures are still standing.
- SchertzFew Texas cities are split three ways, but Schertz spreads from its old center near Cibolo Creek into Guadalupe, Bexar and Comal counties. It carries the name of an Alsatian family who arrived in the 1840s, and today it is the largest of the Randolph Metrocom towns around the air force base, up from 31,465 residents in 2010 to 42,002 in 2020.
- CiboloCibolo — the name means buffalo — occupies the north bank of Cibolo Creek in western Guadalupe County, with one corner reaching across into Bexar. The town took shape around a Southern Pacific railroad crossing and voted to govern itself in 1965. It has more than doubled since, from 15,349 residents in 2010 to 32,276 in 2020.
- Canyon LakeCanyon Lake is less a single town than a ring of lakeside communities — Sattler, Startzville, Canyon City, Cranes Mill — spread over more than 150 square miles of Comal County. Houses followed the reservoir, which was completed in 1964; the census counted about 100 people here in 1980 and 31,124 by 2020.
- BulverdeKnown locally as the front porch of the Texas Hill Country, Bulverde lies in western Comal County about 26 miles north of downtown San Antonio, with U.S. 281 running along its east side and Cibolo Creek tracing the county line just south. German families settled it in 1850 as Pieper Settlement, and the population has grown more than 95 percent since 2000.
