Uhland straddles the Hays and Caldwell county line on State Highway 21, eleven miles from San Marcos and twenty-five south of Austin. German settlers named it after the poet Ludwig Uhland, placing it squarely in the Texas-German belt. The city incorporated in 1985, and its population rose from 1,014 in 2010 to 1,588 in 2020.
