Kirby grew up as a farm settlement along the Southern Pacific railroad and turned suburban after it incorporated in 1955. Now an enclave of just under two square miles ringed by San Antonio, it is nicknamed the Hobo Capital of Texas, a title the city leaned into with a hobo festival and parade first held in May 2008. Some 8,142 people live there.
Kirby sits on Farm to Market Road 78, about eight miles west of Randolph Air Force Base and three miles east of Fort Sam Houston, and uses ZIP code 78219. Residents are zoned to Judson ISD. The town's turn from farmland to suburb began in the 1950s, when families settled here to commute to Randolph, and a drought that began in 1957 led many of the remaining farmers to sell their land.
NOAA's 1991–2020 climate normals for the Randolph station, eight miles east, average about 133 days a year at 90°F or hotter and 24 at 100°F or more, with an August average high near 96°F. San Antonio International Airport averages about 122 and 18.
